158 Democrats Reject Bill To Deport Illegal Immigrants Convicted Of Sex Crimes

In a shocking move, 158 House Democrats voted against legislation designed to deport illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes or domestic violence. The Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), passed 266-158 with support from every Republican and 51 Democrats.

The bill aims to remove individuals who have been convicted of or admit to sexual offenses, conspiracy to commit such crimes, or domestic violence. Supporters argue that protecting women and children from violent offenders should transcend party politics. Yet, an overwhelming majority of Democrats opposed the measure, sparking outrage among Republicans.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) dismissed the bill as a fearmongering tactic, accusing Republicans of exploiting crime to demonize immigrants. Her remarks were met with sharp criticism, as Republicans pointed out the need for accountability and public safety.

Rep. Mace has been vocal in defending the bill, though her history complicates her position. Who has distanced herself from Trump over January 6, Mace later aligned herself with him, raising skepticism about her motivations. However, her support for this legislation has drawn attention to an issue Republicans argue is long overdue for action.

Among the Democrats supporting the bill were Reps. Mary Peltola (D-AK) and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI). Slotkin, running for Senate, faced criticism from her party’s progressive wing for siding with Republicans on a contentious issue.

This vote is part of a larger Republican effort to address border-related crime, with previous bills targeting violent offenders also gaining bipartisan support.
