Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) lashed out at former President Donald Trump’s planned rally in the Bronx on Thursday suggesting it was a fundraising tactic aimed at tricking local residents. Speaking on Spectrum News NY1’s “Mornings On 1,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed Trump recently met with oil executives promising favorable policies in exchange for campaign contributions.

“We just saw that the former president met with oil executives last week saying ‘Hey, you give me a billion dollars and I’ll make sure that you get the policies that are favorable to raising gas prices and making sure that a lot of these companies continue to price gouge without proper oversight or regulation'” Ocasio-Cortez alleged. “So the idea that he’d be bringing those down when he’s cashing in from the same folks that are bringing those prices up I think is a little bit suspect.”

The congresswoman, who co-authored a sweeping proposal to transition the U.S. to renewable energy the Green New Deal, also questioned the authenticity of Trump’s support in the borough — while seemingly arguing for more consumption of fossil fuels.
She predicted the rally crowd would consist mainly of out-of-town supporters rather than Bronx residents.

“I think in terms of a crowd size it’s less about the size and more about who is there for holding a rally in the Bronx” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And if there are folks from different states that are traveling in—which tends to be common with the Trump campaign—then I think it kind of shows that he kind of has to travel around with folks instead of going into communities and actually building authentic support.”
Trump’s rally was a major success, likely leaving local politicians like AOC disappointed and concerned about the evident momentum of the Trump campaign.
