Biden’s DOJ Expands Election Task Force Amid Supposed ‘Threats’

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is expanding its Election Threats Task Force as supposed violent threats against election officials are reportedly rising ahead of the 2024 elections.

President Joe Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that District Election Officers (DEOs) will be deployed across the country to ensure the safety of public servants administering elections. Garland warned that the DOJ will take decisive action against those who threaten or harm election workers.

The task force, originally established in 2021 after a surge in threats, aims to maintain the integrity of the election process. Garland noted that since its formation, around two dozen people have been charged in connection with threats against election officials. “These cases are a warning: if you threaten election workers, we will hold you accountable,” Garland stated.

DEOs will work closely with the task force to handle Election Day complaints, including those related to voting rights and election fraud. In Delaware, U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney Shamoor Anis to serve as DEO, stressing that the DOJ is committed to protecting election workers from violent threats.

The DOJ’s Election Day Program will also provide the public with local contacts to report federal election law violations. By ensuring a safe and fair election, the DOJ hopes to restore confidence in the democratic process.
