Customer and Border Protection (CBP) officials have seized approximately 72,000 fentanyl pills and 44.75 pounds of methamphetamine in a vehicle attempting to cross the southern border.
The drugs were being concealed in the gas tank of the vehicle, which was stopped at the Port of Nogales, Arizona while attempting to cross the southern border into the U.S. on Thursday. CBP agents also found 2.45 pounds of fentanyl powder and 2.9 pounds of cocaine inside the vehicle.
The drug bust follows a trend of record-level seizures of fentanyl. A report last month from El Pais revealed that recent seizures at the southern border had found new versions of the drug, including rainbow fentanyl.
Michael Humphries, the CBP port director of the Port of Nogales, noted that the colorful drug “looks like candy.”
During a mid-August raid, CBP agents discovered over 250,000 pills in a vehicle crossing the southern border. Just one day later, agents found more than 15,000 rainbow fentanyl pills wrapped around the legs of a person who was detained at the border crossing in Nogales, Arizona.
“This may signal a new tactic by transnational criminal organizations,” Humphries stated at the time.
Thus far, the rainbow fentanyl pills have been found in California, Oregon and Washington state.
In a statement following the seizure of 800 fentanyl pills, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office expressed concern that the colorful pills will end up in the hands of children by mistake.
“Deputies are particularly concerned about rainbow fentanyl getting into the hands of young adults or children, who mistake the drug for something else, such as candy or a toy,” the statement read.
Conservatives, including GOP chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, are calling for increased awareness about the deadly drug.
“Biden’s DEA says these lethal pills are meant to target kids, especially as Halloween approaches. 1 pill can kill a child. This is not political. This is not a punchline. Your platform could amplify this warning,” McDaniel tweeted, tagging left-wing comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
.@jimmykimmel, this is “rainbow fentanyl.”
