A Texas delegate attending the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago fell victim to the city’s notorious crime wave early Wednesday morning. The delegate was walking with a friend around 2 a.m. when two masked men in a dark blue Range Rover approached and demanded their belongings at gunpoint. The robbers threatened to shoot if the victims refused to comply.
The robbers didn’t stop with the delegate. After the initial robbery, they crossed the street and targeted two more individuals before speeding away. The suspects are described as two Black males dressed entirely in black, wearing ski masks, and armed with a semi-automatic handgun. They are believed to be responsible for multiple robberies in the downtown area.
On Thursday, Chicago police issued a community alert urging the public to help identify the suspects. The robbery adds another tragic chapter to Chicago’s rising crime statistics. The city has recorded nearly 1,400 shooting incidents and 344 murders so far this year. Despite the national attention on the DNC, crime continues to dominate headlines in Chicago.
The weekend preceding the DNC saw 26 shootings across the city, resulting in 30 victims and five deaths. As Chicago tries to put its best foot forward while hosting this major political event, the ongoing violence serves as a stark reminder of the city’s persistent crime problem.
