A Democrat senator is receiving intense backlash after openly bragging about driving past gas stations in her expensive electric vehicle and not caring how high gas prices were.
During her opening statement in a Senate Finance Committee Hearing on Tuesday, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) laughed as she described driving to the Capitol and seeing how high gas prices were.
“I just have to say just on the issue of gas prices, after waiting for a long time to have enough chips in this country to finally get my electric vehicle, I got it and drove it from Michigan to here this last weekend and went by every single gas station. It didn’t matter how high it was,” the Michigan Democrat said.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity for us to move to vehicles that aren’t going to be dependent on the whims of the oil companies,” Stabenow added.
Considering the fact that the American people are suffering from skyrocketing inflation, record high gas prices and a variety of other economic woes that have left them with serious concerns about their finances, the Democrat senator’s gleeful comments were not well-received.
Gas prices have exceeded a whopping $5 per gallon in at least 13 states — including Stabenow’s home state of Michigan — and there is no sign of the prices going down any time soon. Meanwhile, the median household income in Michigan is $59,234, which is barely higher than the cost of an electric car.
A clip of Stabenow’s remarks immediately went viral on social media, and critics were quick to call her out for her insensitive and entitled attitude.
“To everyone who can afford a $60,000 EV this statement by Stabenow is rollicking, on-point, fun-filled messaging!” one popular tweet read.
Another Twitter user joked “Let them buy Teslas!” making a reference to Marie-Antoinette’s infamous “Let them eat cake!” reply when she was told that her starving subjects had no bread to eat.
“Nothing shows how out-of-touch Democrats are like saying people should just buy an expensive electric car they can’t afford in the middle of record high inflation,” said political commentator Dan Eberhart.
“Ms. Stabenow is a typically clueless, arrogant, smug, sheltered Democrat politician,” another Twitter user replied.
“If MI voters & everyday Americans needed further proof @ how out of touch & elitist these electric limousine liberals are, just listen to Democrat Sen. Stabenow brag about not having to pay for gas while millions of Americans suffer in this #BidenGasHike,” said GOP political commentator Paris Dennard.
“What self-righteous shrills like these don’t care, is that 90% of the American population will never be able to afford an electric car,” another critic responded.
Stabenow’s comments follow similar statements from President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, each of whom have pushed for Americans to invest in electric vehicles to ‘save money’ amid rising gas prices, apparently ignorant of the astronomically high cost of electric vehicles, which many Americans just cannot afford.
So-called ‘comedian’ Stephen Colbert also made similar comments about gas prices, and was roasted on social media for doing so.
“Today, the average gas price in America hit an all-time record high of over $4 per gallon. Okay, that stings, but a clear conscience is worth a buck or two,” said Colbert, whose contract with CBS pays him a salary of $15 million per year.
“I’m willing to pay. I’m willing to pay $4 a gallon. Hell, I’ll pay $15 a gallon because I drive a Tesla,” he added.
One Twitter user’s response summed up the criticism of elites like Colbert perfectly: “The majority of his audience probably takes home per year less than what he paid for his Tesla.”
