Faith-based organizations are voicing strong criticism against Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, accusing her of harboring “anti-Catholic bigotry.” CatholicVote President Brian Burch recently took to X, accusing Harris of believing “that all faithful Catholics should be disqualified from serving as federal judges.”
Harris’s contentious history with the Catholic community dates back to her time on the Senate Judiciary Committee. In 2018, she questioned U.S. District Court nominee Brian C.
Buescher about his involvement with the Knights of Columbus, a prominent Catholic charitable organization. Harris suggested that his affiliation with the Knights, known for its opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage, might disqualify him from judgeship.
Many at the time argued that Harris’s questions amounted to an unconstitutional religious litmus test, as the positions she scrutinized are fundamental Catholic teachings rather than “extreme positions.”
Kathleen Blomquist, a spokesperson for the Knights of Columbus, denounced the bias implicit in Harris’ questions. “Our country’s sad history of anti-Catholic bigotry contributed to the founding of the Knights of Columbus, and we are proud of the many Catholics who overcame this hurdle to contribute so greatly to our country,” Blomquist said. She added that it was disappointing to see that commitment to Catholic principles through membership in the Knights of Columbus would be viewed as a disqualifier from public service.
Kenneth Craycraft, a professor of moral theology at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, warned that Harris “would be the greatest threat to the free exercise of religion than any president in American history, with no close rival.” Craycraft claimed that Harris has not hidden her intention to institute policies against the Catholic Church and against individuals, organizations, and institutions whose beliefs align with the moral theology of the Church.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue chronicled Harris’ actions targeting religious believers, particularly Catholics, regarding abortion and LGBTQI issues. Donohue noted that Harris co-sponsored the Equality Act, which he called “the most anti-religious liberty bill ever introduced.” He also criticized her for voting against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which aimed to protect infants who survive abortion attempts.
Brian Burch emphasized that Harris has epitomized the gross incompetence, corruption, and shameless bigotry characteristic of hard-left politicians. He noted, “She has specifically targeted people of faith and pro-life citizens for their beliefs and defense of the most defenseless in our society.” Burch added that Harris has also led an administration that sought to weaponize the government against its political opponents.
