As Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) continues to gain support, Germany’s political elite is considering drastic measures to stop the nationalist party. A parliamentary debate on Thursday examined whether legal proceedings should be initiated to outlaw AfD, an unprecedented move that has drawn accusations of authoritarianism.
A coalition of 113 lawmakers, including members of the Social Democrats (SPD), Greens, and far-left Die Linke, is behind the push. They argue AfD’s policies undermine Germany’s constitutional order and claim the party promotes nationalist ideologies that threaten democratic principles. Despite this, legal experts remain unconvinced that AfD meets the requirements for a ban, as the party operates within the democratic process.

AfD’s rising popularity stems from growing dissatisfaction with mass immigration, economic struggles, and government mismanagement of energy policies. As the party has climbed in the polls, establishment politicians have resorted to aggressive tactics, including surveillance, funding restrictions, and negative press, in an effort to weaken its influence.
Attempting to ban parties like the AfD is the final gasp of the declining Managerial Elite

The discussion over banning AfD comes as CDU leader Friedrich Merz drew criticism for accepting AfD votes to pass a migration measure. While Merz maintains he does not support AfD’s platform, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and left-wing politicians have accused him of breaking the longstanding policy of refusing to engage with the nationalist party.

In response, protests erupted outside CDU headquarters in Berlin, with demonstrators demanding both CDU and AfD be banned. Meanwhile, members of the Green Party have pushed for stronger political barriers against CDU, claiming the party’s willingness to work with AfD-aligned lawmakers signals a dangerous shift.
One more reason why Europe sucks: In Germany, they actually think it makes sense to outlaw an entire political philosophy as "unconstitutional."

Polls reflect significant political shifts, with CDU at 29% and AfD now polling at 23%. The SPD has fallen to 15%. While the debate over banning AfD continues, the party’s growing support suggests Germany’s political establishment is struggling to suppress the movement.
I don’t like the AfD but a ban isn’t a good idea. All it does is push them into a different party and or group. It doesn’t solve the problem and disengages people to the democratic system. https://t.co/ogNBsIXyrR
