Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) fiercely criticized former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo during his testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday, calling him out for his mishandling of nursing home deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic and his alleged ties to a Chinese spy who worked in his administration.
Greene, a vocal critic of Cuomo, confronted him about his March 2020 directive that forced nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients, a policy that has been widely blamed for exacerbating the death toll among elderly residents. But Greene didn’t stop there—she also focused on the recent arrest of Linda Sun, a former Cuomo aide accused of espionage on behalf of the Chinese government.
“So, Mr. Cuomo, you were thanking China during the pandemic while a Chinese spy was working for you,” Greene stated. “Are you the dumbest tool of the Chinese government or were you aware that you had a spy in your administration?”
Sun, who was arrested earlier this month with her husband, faces multiple charges, including visa fraud and conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Greene connected Sun’s infiltration of Cuomo’s office to broader concerns about Chinese interference in American politics, questioning Cuomo’s leadership and his failure to prevent the breach.
Cuomo, in response, downplayed Sun’s role, claiming she was a minor figure in his administration and stating he wouldn’t recognize her if they were in the same room. However, he acknowledged the growing threat of foreign operatives and emphasized the need for better vetting practices.
Greene also took the opportunity to remind the committee of the sexual misconduct allegations against Cuomo, noting that 13 women have accused him of inappropriate behavior. She suggested the Department of Justice’s decision not to pursue charges was politically motivated, adding to her list of grievances against the former governor.
