House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH) is urging the Biden administration to take action after reports surfaced of North Korean troops amassing in Russia. Turner stated that the involvement of North Korean forces in Ukraine’s war would cross a “red line” for the U.S. and NATO, potentially leading to further conflict escalation.
Turner’s letter to President Biden followed a report from South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, which revealed that 1,500 North Korean special forces have been deployed to Russia’s Far East. These troops are allegedly training to fight for Russia in Ukraine, using Russian weapons and false identities.
Turner expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the Biden administration, stating that Congress has not been briefed on these developments. “The administration has not briefed the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence or the House Armed Services Committee of any assessments by U.S. intelligence agencies or the Department of Defense regarding these troop movements,” Turner said.
North Korea’s military support for Russia has increased in recent months, with the regime supplying millions of artillery rounds. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also warned that North Korea may be planning to send an additional 10,000 troops to reinforce Russian forces in the war.
The potential involvement of North Korean troops marks a critical moment in the conflict, which has already seen heavy losses on both sides. Turner’s call for immediate action underscores the growing international implications of the war in Ukraine.
