Logansport, Indiana, is feeling the impact of a significant population increase driven by the arrival of over 11,000 Haitian migrants since 2020. This 30% surge has overwhelmed local schools, causing overcrowding and leaving parents frustrated. Many blame the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies for failing to protect the community from the consequences of such rapid growth.
Local photographer Candice Espinoza voiced her concerns, telling The New York Post, “Our community cannot withstand this many people being here.” Another resident, Nancy Baker, expressed anger toward the administration, stating she would tell Vice President Kamala Harris to “get off my property” if she visited.
The Logansport school system has struggled to accommodate the influx, with the number of Haitian students rising from 14 to 207 in just one year. Baker’s daughter, Cheyanne, dropped out of high school because teachers focused on the non-English-speaking students, leaving her feeling neglected. “You can’t just focus all your resources on one group while others are falling behind,” Baker said.
Cheyanne now attends an online school, but the challenges for other students persist. Espinoza’s children are among those struggling in the crowded classrooms. “Their education is suffering because teachers have to lower standards to accommodate the migrant students,” she explained.
Many residents are looking to the upcoming election as a turning point. Espinoza, along with others in the community, plans to vote for Donald Trump, believing his policies will bring positive change to their state.
