IRS Spending Tens of Millions on Military Equipment and Ammunition

It’s not enough that President Joe Biden just signed into law a measure to hire a staggering 87,000 more IRS agents. Now it is revealed that the agency has spent and is about to spend more on arming its field agents and purchasing military-style gear.

Is this what Americans are crying out for — a militarized IRS?

The numbers are clear. Already between 2006 and 2019, the IRS spent $21.3 million on guns, ammunition, and military hardware. That left the agency with 4,500 guns and five million ammunition rounds.

Among that total, the IRS has 621 shotguns, 539 long-barrel rifles, and 15 submachine guns. For what exact purpose?

The agency has roughly 2,200 special agents who it says are “investigative forensic accountants.” They work to reveal schemes to defraud the federal government and assist in counterterrorism and narcotics control efforts.

A study by watchdog group Open the Books showed between 2015 and 2019, $8.7 million was spent arming the IRS. Of that amount, $4.5 million went to guns and ammunition and $4.2 million for military equipment.

The IRS is charged with helping Americans meet their tax responsibilities, which does not appear to coincide with a military-style buildup. And now, with Biden’s 87,000 new agents and $80 billion in funding, does anyone believe this new trend is going away?

The IRS is hardly the only federal agency that does not appear to need weapons but is being steadily militarized. American Transparency in 2020 reported that 103 federal agencies are now piling up armaments.

The Animal and Plant Inspection Service spent $3.9 million on rifles, ammunition, dart guns, and night vision equipment between 2006 and 2019. And the Railroad Retirement Board spent over $50,000 on weapons and ammunition.

When was the last train heist?

The IRS is being beefed up in an unprecedented way by the Biden administration, and that will obviously include even more armaments and firepower. This does not bode well for an agency that many already distrust and a government that is arming itself to the teeth.
