House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) has sent letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, urging them to preserve all records related to the Biden administration’s enforcement of immigration laws.
The letters come amid growing concerns that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) may be destroying crucial documents linked to ongoing congressional investigations into the handling of the border crisis.
Jordan’s warning was triggered by the sighting of a paper shredding truck outside the DOJ earlier this week, which he believes may signal an attempt to purge relevant records. In his letters, Jordan emphasized the importance of preserving all documents, communications, and electronic information that could be relevant to the committee’s inquiry, including metadata, text messages, and messages sent via personal devices or encrypted applications.

This move follows a pattern of missed oversight requests by both the DOJ and DHS over the past two years, which have raised concerns about transparency and cooperation. Jordan pointed out that these agencies have failed to respond adequately to numerous requests for information from the committee, further fueling suspicions of a deliberate attempt to withhold vital evidence.
The preservation notice issued by Jordan is not just a routine request; it is a stern reminder to both Garland and Mayorkas that the committee expects full cooperation. “This instruction includes all electronic messages sent using official and personal accounts or devices,” Jordan stated, underscoring the broad scope of information that must be retained for review.

The Justice Department responded to the allegations, denying that it is involved in destroying records. A spokesperson for the DOJ stated that the department follows all laws related to record preservation, and continues to do so. However, Jordan’s request for document preservation is part of a larger investigation into the mishandling of border issues by the Biden administration.

As the House Judiciary Committee continues its investigation, Jordan’s letters make it clear that any efforts to obstruct the inquiry by destroying or altering records will not be tolerated. The committee’s push for transparency and accountability on immigration enforcement remains a central focus, with Jordan vowing to hold the administration accountable for its actions.
