A pair of congressional lawmakers recently began asking Attorney General Merrick Garland and Special Counsel Robert Hur questions surrounding a case involving President Joe Biden’s missing classified documents.
Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IO) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) claimed that Hur’s report, which referred to Biden as an elderly individual with a poor memory and said the president is guilty of stealing and keeping highly sensitive documents, lacked evidence.
The senators are wondering what happened to nine boxes of classified documents the president illegally possessed and sent to his lawyer’s office, which were later obtained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Grassley and Johnson pointed out that Hur’s report excluded such a key detail.
“Last yr in response 2 Grassley-Johnson oversight the Natl Archives said they picked up 9 boxes of potentially classified Biden docs & FBI reviewed the contents Where were those 9 boxes mentioned in Hur’s report? NOWHERE Im asking for an explanation We need 2 know what was in them,” Grassley wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Grassley and Johnson sent a letter to Garland, asking the attorney general what exactly occurred to Biden’s missing classified documents.
“Oddly, Special Counsel Hur’s report did not mention NARA’s retrieval of the nine boxes from Mr. Moore’s office,” the letter read.
“This apparent omission is significant given that, according to NARA, the Department of Justice requested that NARA recover the boxes. In fact, in March 2023, NARA informed our offices that ‘while NARA has not reviewed the contents of the nine boxes, the FBI has,’” it added.
The congressmen are wondering what the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) did with the nine boxes of “reviewed” classified documents.
“If the FBI did review the contents of the boxes, it is unclear what was found, to include any classified information, and whether the FBI informed Special Counsel Hur’s office of its findings. Further, it is unclear if Special Counsel Hur had any awareness of or reviewed the information contained in these nine boxes,” the senators wrote.
Grassley and Johnson’s letter comes after the duo sent a letter to NARA in February 2023 and again in August 2023, calling on the agency to explain what happened to the documents containing Biden’s pseudonyms and email accounts that it received from the president’s attorney, Pat Moore.
