Marion Maréchal, the niece of Marine Le Pen and a member of the European Parliament, blasted the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, calling it an insult to Christian values. Maréchal, who watched the event with her children, described the ceremony as a display of “crude woke propaganda.”
In her statements, Maréchal highlighted several moments from the ceremony that she found offensive, including depictions of Marie-Antoinette and the presence of drag queens. She also mentioned the performance of the Republican Guard, who were made to dance to Aya Nakamura’s music, as an example of what she sees as the ceremony’s general lack of taste.
Maréchal took to social media to address her concerns, specifically mentioning Christians around the world who might have felt disrespected by the ceremony. She emphasized that the views presented in the opening ceremony do not represent the French populace but rather a “left-wing minority” intent on provocation.
Maréchal has a history of vocalizing her opinions on cultural and political issues. After stepping back from French politics in 2017, she founded the Institute of Social, Economic, and Political Sciences (ISSEP) in Lyon. Her stance on mass migration and its impact on France has been a recurring theme in her public appearances, including her speech at the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the United States.
Her political journey saw a significant shift in 2022 when she allied with Éric Zemmour’s Reconquête Party, only to part ways with them recently. Now an independent member of the European Parliament, Maréchal aligns herself with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni’s European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).
It remains uncertain whether Maréchal will rejoin her aunt’s National Rally party, but her recent remarks reflect her ongoing commitment to defending what she believes are traditional French and Christian values.
