Mayorkas Was Asked the Perfect Question About Disinformation and the Southern Border

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas answered questions from the Senate Appropriations Committee and he was asked some very important questions about his ability to keep the southern border secure during Biden’s worsening border crisis.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) grilled Mayorkas on the claim that he has the border under control. In 2021, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported record low numbers of illegal immigrants, compared to years prior. At the same time, there were a record number of illegal immigrants entering the country.

Capito questioned the Disinformation Governance Board (DGB) and the dystopian future that it could bring. Capito even asked Mayorkas if it counted as “disinformation” to claim that the Biden administration has the southern border under control.

Capito asked, “I think, quite honestly, for the good of the rest of the department, that now is a good time to abandon this ludicrous and much-maligned idea [DGB]. I wonder, when you say that we have operational control of the border, is that, definitionally, disinformation? Because, from a lot of our perspectives, we don’t believe that is true.”

Mayorkas said that The DGB was a working group and he wants to make sure that there are good policies and guardrails that do not infringe on free speech, civil liberties and constitutional rights.

Disinformation isn’t subjective no matter how much Mayorkas wants to believe it is. Facts and statistics matter. Deportations in 2021 totaled 59,011 over 12 months ending in September 2021 compared to 185,884 in the year before. You might think that 2021 was a slow year for border crossings, but there were a record number of encounters, topping 2 million.

While 1.2 million people await deportation, Biden’s administration wants to end Title 42, which speeds up the process. Ending Title 42 without a replacement policy is going to cause another mass wave of illegal immigration.

Capito noted that with Title 42 coming to an end, the Center for Disease Control still has Covid-19 policies in place that aren’t allowing ICE to use all of their bed space to stop the spread of infection and “that doesn’t jive at all.” It’s difficult for the federal government to explain their way out of ending one Covid-19 protocol, but keeping another.
