A leaked Department of Justice memo issued on May 25 by Joe Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland expanded an investigative policy instituted by his predecessor in the Trump administration, Bill Barr.
The nature of the policy sparked outrage among leftist progressives, as it said that investigators must get prior approval to look into presidential candidates or their staff.
Garland said that DOJ investigators must have his written approval before they open a file on anyone who has declared they are running for president or vice president. That requirement also applies to investigations of presidential campaign organizations and senior officials and advisors.
The report of the leaked memo comes amid increasingly intense pressure from Democrats on Garland to initiate criminal charges against President Trump. Those demands come as the narrative playing out in the hearings of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s hand-selected January 6 Commission fan the flames of liberal outrage against Trump.
Trump has not formally announced that he plans to run again for president in 2024, although he has strongly hinted recently that he will.
D.C. Police Officer Daniel Hodges was injured on January 6 and led the Twitter outrage against Garland. He wrote that if the attorney general wants to be “neutral,” political activity should have no bearing on his work. Hodges then said that Garland is not neutral, but is instead “shielding” President Trump “because of politics.”
Radio host Michelangelo Signorile condemned Garland, saying that the policy is “designed to protect criminals of prior administration”.
Warren Macleod wrote that Garland is now a “cop-out” leading a “Justice Department without teeth.”
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow revealed the leaked memo to her audience Monday evening. After her report led to harsh responses, she wrote to her audience advising a more nuanced approach. She said that it “makes sense to centralize and formalize control over politically sensitive investigations.”
In typical fashion, liberals have reacted with total outrage at anything less than a formal prosecution of President Trump. Unfortunately for them, the corporate media and Peolsi’s House deputies have conditioned them to accept every accusation and hearsay allegation with complete credulity.
While that is likely to continue to stir up the Democrat base and raise funds in advance of the midterm elections, it is doubtful that new waves or outrage will sway undecided or independent voters who are already exhausted with the devastating effect of Biden White House policies.
