MTG Moves To Force Vote To Impeach Mayorkas

After two of her constituents were killed in a crash involving a suspected human smuggler, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) moved to force a vote on the House floor to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his failure to secure the southern border and keep Americans safe.

In her speech on the House floor, Greene accused Mayorkas of “high crimes and misdemeanors” — arguing that he had “willfully abandoned his duty” to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and “protect states against invasion” by illegal aliens. She also condemned Mayorkas for failing to halt the trafficking of deadly drugs such as the synthetic opioid fentanyl into the country.

As Greene’s resolution is privileged, it means that the Republican-controlled House must act on the measure within two legislative days — suggesting that it may go further than previous attempts to impeach Mayorkas. However, it is unclear how much support Greene can expect from her fellow Republicans — as they are fond of criticizing Mayorkas for his handling of the border crisis, but not known for rallying together to take bold actions such as impeachment.

While newly-elected Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) has recently stated his belief that Mayorkas “committed impeachable offenses,” he has also told Fox News host Sean Hannity that the House is busy with the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden and “we only have so much time and resources to go after that.”

Meanwhile, Greene further slammed Mayorkas in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter — holding him responsible for the deaths of two Georgia residents, 67-year-old Jose Lerma and 65-year-old Isabel Lerma. The victims were among eight people killed in Texas when a suspected human trafficker driving a vehicle full of Honduran illegal aliens crashed into the Lermas’ vehicle while fleeing police.

“Today, two innocent Americans from Dalton, GA in Whitfield County, my district in Northwest Georgia, were murdered by a human smuggler with a vehicle full of illegal aliens. This is unacceptable! Alejandro Mayorkas is derelict of his duty to secure our Southern border and my constituents are dying!! I ask everyone to join me in prayer for the victims, their family, and loved ones,” Greene wrote in the post.

In another post announcing her resolution on Thursday, Greene continued highlighting the deaths of Jose and Isabel Lerma, pointing out that they “had 5 kids who will never get to say goodbye.”

“The utter disregard for American life displayed by Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas can no longer be ignored,” she added. “The time for more hearings and phases is over. Americans are getting murdered just traveling to see their families. Lives have been lost forever. Everyone should care. This is not a political issue. That’s why I just introduced privileged Articles to IMPEACH Secretary Mayorkas.”
