The Chairman of the Nebraska Republican Party, Eric Underwood, has sent a letter to the Republican National Committee (RNC) due to his decision to rescind his endorsement of Ronna McDaniel’s reelection bid for RNC Chair. “At this time, I rescind my endorsement of Chairwoman McDaniel,” he wrote, adding that he will “not make any further public endorsement for any leadership level at the RNC.”
The RNC chair has faced resistance as she runs for a fourth two-year term after Republicans had a mediocre midterm election last month.
In his letter, Underwood indicated he would “bring the question of RNC Leadership to a vote of the elected members of the Nebraska Central Committee at our January 21st meeting.” He plans to present a vote to the 166 SCC members regarding their desire for RNC Chair.

He campaigned on the idea of being a “unifying figure” when he beat Dan Welch for chairman earlier this year. He added that if the weeks to come are more about petty politics and public endorsements, he would instead focus on the people of Nebraska.
Underwood’s letter didn’t go unnoticed by J.L. Spray, a member of Nebraska’s National Committee. According to Spray, anger isn’t a strategy but can make a chairperson nervous. “Those of us who are in a position to make an informed decision ought to exercise that decision,” he added.
Instead of being a public media affair, this election is an inside look at the Republican Party, Spray emphasized. Spray praised McDaniel as a consistent leader that raised healthy funds, provided tools and resources to all parties and territories and made data-driven investments.
It all comes after the Texas Republican Party executive committee unanimously called for new leadership after a terrible 2020 election and a mediocre 2022. Last Saturday, Texas’s State Republican Executive Committee (SREC) passed a resolution saying it had “no confidence” in the RNC under McDaniel.
Despite the momentum against McDaniel, only two candidates have announced plans to challenge her — My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell and attorney Harmeet Dhillon. Dhillon seems to be McDaniel’s top challenger.
According to a source familiar with McDaniel’s campaign, 168 RNC members have endorsed her in an updated endorsement letter, which would be well above the majority she needs.
