In response to the recently leaked draft Supreme Court opinion that indicates a reversal of Roe v. Wade could be coming shortly, Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing millions in new pro-choice proposals in the Golden State.
In the event Roe is overturned, the question of abortion regulation would be returned to the states nationwide. Newsom appears poised to capitalize on the marketing opportunity of luring women to travel to California to receive an abortion. He is therefore proposing millions of dollars in new pro-choice programs.
Having survived a recall effort last year, Newsom is capitalizing on the national attention on abortion regulation as he runs this year for another full term in office.
Among his proposals, Newsom is calling for $1 million to be spent developing a “Comprehensive Reproductive Rights Website.”
According to a press release, the website would provide “accurate and updated” information to the public about the legal right to obtain an abortion under California law. It would also provide details on available abortion providers and options for insurance coverage that would pay for abortions. It would also give readers information on state-funded programs.
Newsom has also proposed $40 million for direct grants to private abortion clinics to “offset the cost of providing care” to lower income mothers who want an abortion but do not have health insurance.
The governor is calling for another $15 million in grants to “community-based reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations.” Those grants would be designed to allow the groups to “conduct medically accurate and culturally competent outreach” on abortion-related services.
Newsom is also requesting $1 million to go to research into the “unmet needs for access” to abortion in the state.
Newsom’s press statement went on to say that his government will “not stand idly by as extremists roll back our basic constitutional rights.” He said that California will “fight like hell” to ensure that women everywhere are aware that his state supports abortion. It was unclear whether Newsom actually believes there is anyone in the U.S. who is not aware that California’s government favors abortion.
He added that the state intends to expand abortion access and will “welcome businesses and their employees fleeing anti-abortion states.”
