Sanctuary City Policies Face Legal Scrutiny From Miller’s Firm

Stephen Miller, a top adviser to President Donald Trump, has issued a stark warning to sanctuary jurisdictions, asserting that their policies could lead to severe criminal and financial repercussions. The warning was delivered through a letter sent to 249 sanctuary leaders, urging them to reconsider their positions.

Miller’s letter highlighted the risks of sanctuary policies, noting that federal law requires the removal of illegal immigrants and that it is illegal to obstruct federal immigration enforcement. The letter stressed that sanctuary jurisdictions may be violating these laws and could face legal consequences as a result.

According to the letter, sanctuary jurisdiction policies could expose local officials to criminal liability under federal conspiracy laws. The letter explained that even if officials don’t directly harbor illegal immigrants, their involvement in sanctuary policies could make them liable for federal offenses.

Miller’s team also warned that sanctuary policies could result in personal financial liability for officials. Victims of crimes committed by individuals protected by sanctuary policies could sue under the federal RICO Act, with the potential for triple damages.

The letter concluded with a reminder from Theodore Roosevelt, urging officials to obey the law and reconsider their policies. Despite the serious legal implications, California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta dismissed the letter, arguing that state law protects sanctuary jurisdictions and that federal enforcement will continue as required.
