Secret Service Director Resigns Amid Criticism, Biden Expresses Gratitude

President Joe Biden has publicly thanked Kimberly Cheatle, the outgoing Secret Service Director, who has been heavily criticized following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Cheatle resigned after a heated House Oversight Committee hearing that highlighted severe security failures under her watch.

In a statement, Biden commended Cheatle’s dedication. “Kimberly Cheatle has devoted her career to protecting our nation. Her commitment and bravery as Secret Service Director are highly valued,” Biden said. “Taking responsibility for the agency’s actions shows her strong leadership and integrity.”

Cheatle stepped down following an incident at a Pennsylvania rally where a gunman shot Trump in the ear. Trump narrowly escaped more serious harm by turning his head. Sadly, Corey Comperatore, 50, was fatally wounded while shielding his family, and two others were hurt.

During the committee hearing, Cheatle admitted to the agency’s failings and announced an internal probe. However, she provided scant details and withheld requested documents, according to Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). Cheatle also disclosed that there were no radio recordings from the day of the shooting.

Fox News reported that the assailant had hidden his firearm prior to the attack. “It was not immediately clear where he hid it,” the report noted. “By the time agents saw him on the roof, he was already holding it.”

Cheatle explained that counter-snipers were not placed on the roof due to its slope, citing safety concerns. Despite identifying the shooter as a potential threat, Trump was allowed to proceed to the stage. Video evidence shows rally attendees alerting authorities about the shooter just before the attack.

Biden’s statement included plans to appoint a new Secret Service Director soon. The investigation into the security breach is ongoing, and Cheatle’s resignation is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the agency’s failures.
