Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) and his wife, Gisele, were hospitalized on Sunday following a car accident where the senator rear-ended another vehicle. The incident occurred on Interstate 70, as reported by the New York Post. Both were taken to a nearby hospital “out of an abundance of caution” and treated for minor injuries.
“On Sunday morning, John and Gisele were involved in a car accident with another driver. Out of an abundance of caution, they were evaluated at a local hospital. John was treated for a bruised shoulder and they were discharged that afternoon. They are doing well and happy to be back in Braddock,” said a spokesperson for Fetterman in a statement.
The Maryland State Police provided more details, stating the crash happened around 8 a.m. Fetterman, driving a Chevrolet Traverse, struck the rear of a Chevrolet Impala. “According to a preliminary investigation, a Chevrolet Traverse and a Chevrolet Impala were both traveling west on I-70 when for unknown reasons, the Traverse struck the rear of the Impala. The driver of the Traverse is identified as John Fetterman, 54, of Pennsylvania,” the police stated.
Both the Fettermans and the passenger of the Impala were taken to War Memorial Hospital in West Virginia by ambulance. “No citations were issued. The crash investigation remains active and ongoing,” added the police.
Sen. Fetterman has faced health challenges, including a stroke in May 2022 while campaigning for his Senate seat. This stroke has affected his speech and ability to process conversations, leading him to use speech-to-text devices during congressional hearings and routine conversations to transcribe spoken words in real time.
