Sen. Moreno Moves To Ban Foreign Flags In US Capitol Amid Backlash Over Ukraine Displays

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) is pushing new legislation to ban foreign flags from being displayed on Capitol grounds, arguing that elected officials should represent American interests, not those of other nations. The proposal, known as the “Allegiance Act,” comes after Democratic lawmakers showcased Ukrainian flags during President Donald Trump’s congressional address.

Moreno, a legal immigrant from Colombia, has made it clear that he finds the presence of foreign flags in the halls of Congress unacceptable. “When I became a citizen, I pledged allegiance to the United States and no other country,” Moreno said. “Seeing elected officials wave foreign flags in our Capitol is an insult to the American people.”

The bill would prohibit taxpayer funds from being used to purchase foreign flags and bar their display within congressional buildings. Moreno and other Republicans took a stand before Trump’s address by distributing American flags in response to the Ukrainian banners that were prominently displayed by Democrats.

This legislative push follows a tense meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which ended with Zelensky being removed from the White House after a heated exchange with Trump and Vice President JD Vance. In response, the Trump administration cut off military aid and suspended intelligence-sharing with Ukraine.

Moreno has positioned himself as a staunch ally of Trump, backing the president’s policies and advocating for an “America First” approach in the Senate. His bill aims to ensure that congressional displays reflect loyalty to the United States rather than foreign interests.

The proposed ban on foreign flags has drawn support from other Republican lawmakers who believe that Congress should not be used as a platform for promoting international causes.
