Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is under fire from conservative factions to step up his efforts after he called attention to President Joe Biden’s opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act). The bill proposes amending the National Voter Registration Act to require proof of citizenship for voter registration and to purge noncitizens from voter rolls.
The White House issued a statement declaring that noncitizens voting in federal elections is already a federal crime, with existing state safeguards deemed sufficient. The administration argued that the SAVE Act would not enhance election security but would instead make voter registration more difficult for eligible Americans and increase the risk of lawful voters being removed from the rolls.
Johnson took to social media to criticize Biden’s stance, expressing alarm that the president would veto a bill aimed at preventing noncitizens from voting. Johnson accused Democrats of wanting to convert illegal aliens into voters and stressed the necessity of passing the SAVE Act.
Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, shared Johnson’s post and supported Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s claim that Biden and the Democrats are attempting to allow illegal immigrants to vote in the upcoming election. Musk also advocated for the elimination of mail-in ballots and electronic voting machines, suggesting that paper ballots and in-person voting are necessary to ensure election integrity.
The controversy over the SAVE Act underscores ongoing concerns about the security and fairness of U.S. elections, with conservatives advocating for stricter measures to prevent noncitizen voting and ensure that only eligible citizens participate in the electoral process.
