Texas AG Paxton Sues Travis County Over Alleged Voter Registration Violations

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) filed a lawsuit against Travis County, claiming the county broke state law by hiring a third-party company to assist with voter registration efforts. The lawsuit, filed Friday, alleges that Travis County improperly engaged Civic Government Solutions to track down unregistered voters, which Paxton says goes beyond the county’s legal authority.

Paxton also cited concerns over the CEO of Civic Government Solutions, who has reportedly expressed support for progressive candidates, raising questions about the impartiality of the registration efforts. “Travis County has blatantly violated Texas law by paying partisan actors to conduct unlawful identification efforts to track down people who are not registered to vote,” Paxton said. He added that these actions “invite fraud and reduce public trust in our elections.”

Travis County defended its actions, with spokesperson Hector Nieto stating that the county is “proud of our outreach efforts” and committed to maintaining the integrity of the voter registration process. Nieto also criticized Paxton for undermining trust in elections, calling the lawsuit “disappointing.”

This lawsuit comes just days after Paxton sued Bexar County for similar reasons, accusing them of improperly mailing out voter registration forms to residents regardless of their requests.

Paxton’s legal actions highlight an ongoing battle over election integrity and voter registration processes in Texas, particularly as the state approaches upcoming elections.
