Trump Criticizes Panama Over Canal, Names Ambassador Cabrera

President-elect Donald Trump is intensifying his criticism of Panama’s management of the Panama Canal, accusing the Central American nation of exploiting the United States. On Christmas Day, Trump announced Kevin Marino Cabrera as the next US ambassador to Panama, doubling down on his grievances about the canal’s operation.

Trump’s announcement on Truth Social described Panama as “ripping us off on the Panama Canal,” vowing to address what he views as unfair practices. He praised Cabrera’s record as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner and Vice Chairman of the International Trade Consortium, highlighting his expertise in fostering economic partnerships and advancing America First priorities.

The appointment comes as relations between the US and Panama become increasingly strained. Trump and Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo have exchanged public barbs about the canal’s future, with Trump hinting at potential US intervention to reclaim control of the strategic waterway.

This development is part of Trump’s broader push to renegotiate trade relationships in the Western Hemisphere. Recently, he also took aim at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, suggesting Canada might be better off as the “51st state” if trade imbalances persist.

Cabrera, a seasoned political operative with deep knowledge of Latin America, is expected to be a key figure in advancing Trump’s vision. His appointment signals a shift in US foreign policy toward a more assertive stance in the region. The Panama Canal’s economic significance ensures this diplomatic clash will remain in the spotlight.
