In a contentious “Meet the Press” interview, President-elect Donald Trump declared that members of the Jan. 6 committee, including former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, “should go to jail.” Trump’s statement came in response to questions from NBC’s Kristen Welker, who sought clarity on his stance.
“The actions of that committee were disgraceful,” Trump said, doubling down on his view that the investigation into the Jan. 6 protests was politically motivated. When asked if he would direct federal agencies to prosecute committee members, Trump replied, “I’m not gonna focus on that. I’m gonna focus on drill, baby, drill.”
“Honestly, they should all go to jail.”

Trump’s incoming administration, which includes nominees like Kash Patel for FBI Director and Pam Bondi for Attorney General, could revisit the committee’s actions. Bondi previously stated that prosecuting overreaches within the Justice Department would be a priority, describing the need to “clean house.”
While addressing Welker, Trump reiterated that his focus would remain on improving the country. “I’m looking to make our country great,” he said. “Retribution will be through success.”

Trump’s remarks highlight his belief that accountability for the Jan. 6 committee’s actions should be considered while maintaining his focus on key issues like the economy and border security. His administration’s approach to these matters remains a subject of national interest.
