In a recent HarrisX poll, former President Donald Trump is shown to have a significant lead over both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in hypothetical general election matchups. This survey adds to the growing unease within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s viability as their candidate for the 2024 presidential race.
Conducted between June 28 and June 30, 2024, the poll surveyed 1,500 registered voters. The results indicate Trump would defeat Harris by a margin of seven percentage points, while his lead over Biden is slightly narrower at four percentage points. The poll has a margin of error of ± 2.5 percentage points.
If the election were held today, Trump would secure 49% of the vote compared to Harris’ 42%. In contrast, Trump would receive 47% of the vote against Biden’s 43%. These figures include responses from undecided voters who leaned towards a candidate when prompted.
The results of this poll come as Democrats scramble to address concerns over Biden’s recent debate performance, which many viewed as lackluster. Amid growing calls from within the party for Biden to step down, some have suggested that Harris might be a stronger candidate. However, the poll indicates that replacing Biden with Harris may not improve the party’s chances in the upcoming election.
Michael Moore, a prominent filmmaker and activist, recently called for Biden to resign, describing his debate performance as an “utter collapse.” Moore argued that the Democratic Party’s insistence on keeping Biden in the race amounts to “elder abuse.”
Despite discussions about potentially replacing Biden with Harris, the poll suggests that such a move might not be sufficient to counter Trump’s growing support. As the election approaches, the Democratic Party faces a challenging decision on how to best position itself for victory in 2024.
