President Donald Trump fired back at former Vice President Dick Cheney after Cheney endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Trump took to TRUTH Social, where he referred to Cheney as an “irrelevant RINO” and criticized his daughter, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), for her significant loss in the 2022 Congressional race.
Trump’s remarks came after Cheney publicly backed Harris, claiming he was putting the country above partisanship.
Trump didn’t hold back in his critique of Cheney, referring to him as the “king of endless, nonsensical wars,” a jab at Cheney’s legacy of promoting U.S. involvement in prolonged military conflicts during his time as vice president. Cheney’s endorsement of Harris, which emphasized defending the Constitution over party loyalty, sparked strong reactions within the GOP.
Cheney stated his decision was based on his belief that every citizen has a responsibility to prioritize the nation over party politics. “As citizens, we each have a duty to put the country above partisanship,” Cheney said, a comment that drew praise from some but sharp criticism from Trump supporters.
Trump responded by doubling down on his self-proclaimed status as the “Peace President,” emphasizing his commitment to keeping the U.S. out of foreign conflicts. He added, “Only I will stop World War III!”
The exchange highlights the ongoing rift between Trump and the old-guard Republicans like Cheney, who have become increasingly estranged from the GOP under Trump’s leadership.
