Vigano Condemns NATO’s Role As Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire Takes Effect

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has renewed his criticism of NATO’s involvement in the Ukraine-Russia war, arguing that Ukraine has been used as a proxy in the West’s conflict with Russia. His comments come as Ukraine and Russia implement a temporary

ceasefire, a notable shift in the war that has stretched into its third year.

In a post on X, Vigano stated that Ukraine has functioned as a “battering ram” for NATO’s objectives and questioned whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should even be involved in peace negotiations. He argued that since Zelenskyy did not initiate the war or dictate its military strategy, his role in peace talks is unclear.

Vigano’s stance is consistent with his previous remarks in 2022 when he accused “deep state” elements in the U.S., EU, and NATO of escalating tensions with Russia rather than pursuing peace. His views stand in direct contrast to NATO’s official position, which maintains that Ukraine has the right to defend itself and that Russia’s actions constitute an illegal invasion.

The archbishop’s post also referenced Zelenskyy’s recent claim that he is “exchangeable” in Ukraine’s bid to join NATO, a statement that has drawn attention to the country’s reliance on Western support. He further raised concerns about U.S. foreign policy, questioning why President Donald Trump was working to bring peace to Ukraine while also leading a proxy war in the Middle East in support of Israel.

Vigano also highlighted what he called the persecution of Christians in Syria and Gaza, warning that global instability threatens Christian populations. He called for an end to what he described as Western-backed aggression and urged leaders to take action to protect Christian communities.

With the ceasefire now in effect, attention will turn to how the situation unfolds and whether this agreement leads to further diplomatic efforts.
