Whistleblower Alleges FBI Infiltrated Trump Campaign On Comey’s Orders With No Legal Basis

A whistleblower has alleged that the FBI, under former Director James Comey, infiltrated then-candidate Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign in a covert investigation using undercover agents known as “honeypots.” This disclosure, sent to the House Judiciary Committee, indicates that Comey personally directed the operation without a formal case file or legal foundation.

According to the whistleblower, the FBI deployed two agents to embed with Trump’s campaign staff. These agents reportedly traveled with the team, attempting to gather incriminating evidence, though no specific crime was being pursued. The disclosure states that Comey ordered the investigation with assistance from FBI Deputy Director Dave Bowdich and Washington field office Assistant Director Paul Abbate.

The operation allegedly focused on Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, who later faced charges related to providing false statements to the FBI. Papadopoulos was eventually pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2020. The whistleblower claims the investigation was suspended when a news outlet obtained a photo of one of the agents and intended to publish it.

To avoid exposure, the FBI’s press office reportedly told the newspaper that releasing the photo would endanger the informant’s life. The whistleblower also stated that, following the operation’s shutdown, some involved employees were reassigned and instructed never to discuss the operation.

Former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker called the reported investigation a “serious breach” of procedure, noting that such a probe would require attorney general authorization. The House Judiciary Committee has stated it will examine the whistleblower’s claims to determine whether procedural violations occurred.
