Romer went further on immigration. She said the group’s long-term plan includes abolishing borders and giving amnesty to anyone currently living in the country illegally. On prisons, she said the goal is to abolish them “at least in large part,” again describing it as a long-term program rather than an immediate proposal.

Platform Also Targets Presidency And Pentagon

The interview covered more than borders and prisons. Romer confirmed the group wants to replace the presidency and the Supreme Court as they currently exist, and she said defunding the Pentagon is also part of the platform. Other reporting shows the group wants to scrap the Electoral College and replace the presidency with something closer to a prime minister role.

The Democratic Socialists of America is not a fringe group with no real power anymore. Its co-chair recently taunted Democratic Party leaders after a Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidate, Melat Kiros, beat a longtime incumbent in a primary race. Romer’s message to establishment Democrats was direct: “We warned you, bro, we truly did”.

The Democratic Socialists of America’s official platform, as described on its own materials, calls for ending cash bail and mandatory minimum sentences, and demilitarizing police departments, alongside more mainstream progressive goals like a Green New Deal and single-payer health care. Critics note that even some sympathetic commentators have questioned whether full prison abolition is realistic as a near-term goal for cities.
