“Red Flag” laws are all the rage in states looking for an end run around the Second Amendment. In 21 states firearms can be confiscated without due process from people who are reported by a third party as being a “dangerous person.”

President Biden’s Department Of Justice (DOJ) has quietly created a “National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center” — which will be a federal red flag database. This was likely based on provisions in the 2022 Bipartisan “Safer Communities” Act.
The wording of the DOJ press release announcing the program states: “Through the Center and its newly launched website, states, local governments, law enforcement, prosecutors, attorneys, judges, clinicians, victim service providers, and behavioral health and other social service providers will have direct access to critical information that will enhance their ability to reduce firearm homicides and suicides.”
The frightening part of that word salad is “direct access to critical information.” This could mean private medical records, including psychiatric data. Everyone who has ever seen a therapist or been prescribed a Xanax pill could find themselves on a federal “dangerous persons” list. Many wonder whether everyone who is taking anti-depressants will be at risk of having masked federal agents confiscate their weapons in the wee hours of the night.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA) warned that the new Center will weaponize every DOJ “spy tool” to generate information on American gun owners.
Democrats were not alone in creating this cancer in the Second Amendment. Thirty-one Republicans — fifteen senators and sixteen representatives — voted for this bill. The list includes the usual suspects of the “Republicans In Name Only” (RINO) club, such as Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).
The groundwork is laid for a national gun registry which can easily be used to produce lists for door-to-door confiscation of firearms. Pretexts can be concocted for every lawful gun owner to be forcibly parted from their weapons. The argument could be made that anyone who supports the “insurrectionist” Donald Trump is mentally ill. Perhaps Catholics will be deemed “dangerous persons” based on how the FBI has targeted them under President Biden.
This brand-new DOJ program is nothing short of a poison pill in the Second Amendment.
If supporters of freedom and the Second Amendment wonder if the news could be worse — Vice President Kamala Harris seems to be tapped to oversee the program.
