A 21-year-old woman was thrown off a 130-foot bridge in Brazil without a safety rope — and she was still alive when rescuers reached her.

Story Highlights

  • Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas fell 130 feet from Brazil’s Skeleton Bridge on June 13 after staff failed to attach her safety rope before the jump.
  • Video shows bystanders shouting “The rope!” as she fell — and the unattached cord still lying on the platform after she dropped.
  • An off-duty nurse reached her at the bottom and confirmed she was still alive; she later died from her injuries at the scene.
  • Six people were arrested; three face homicide charges after two tried to flee into nearby woods and were caught with help from a military helicopter.

What Happened at Skeleton Bridge

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas arrived at the Ponte do Esqueleto — known as Skeleton Bridge — in Limeira, São Paulo, Brazil, for what she believed was a safe rope jump. Two staff members carried her horizontally to the edge of the bridge and launched her in a “Superman” position. Witnesses told Brazil’s Military Police that no safety rope had been attached before she was thrown. She fell roughly 40 meters — about 131 feet — into the ravine below.[1]

Just minutes before the jump, de Freitas had posted on social media with photos of the setup. She wrote something along the lines of, “Who was the crazy one who let me come jump off a bridge?” Video recorded at the scene captured bystanders screaming “The rope, people, the rope!” The footage then panned to show the safety cord still lying on the platform as she fell out of view. Her fiancé was reportedly among the onlookers who watched her fall.[17]

She Was Alive — But Rescuers Couldn’t Save Her

Off-duty nurse Rayza Dias was at the site when de Freitas fell. Dias scrambled down the steep, muddy slope to reach her, describing the difficult terrain in a later interview. When she arrived, de Freitas was still alive. Emergency responders, including firefighters and paramedics, also rushed to the scene. Despite their efforts, de Freitas died at the site from multiple injuries. Her mother, devastated by the loss, reportedly cried out, “That damned rope.”[19]

The operation at the bridge was run by a group linked to a company called Entre Cordas and an instructor brand called Ih Voei. Staff at the scene wore shirts bearing both names. Authorities say the group had no permit or authorization to run jump activities at the bridge, which sits on federal land. A local police delegate, Andrea Dantas Levy, stated plainly: “It was a team there that wasn’t regulated; they didn’t even have authorization to be there.”[1]

Arrests, Charges, and a Fleeing Crew

Six people were taken in for questioning at the Limeira Police District. Three men — aged 27, 32, and 42 — were formally arrested and charged with homicide under Brazilian law. The charge used, homicide with eventual intent, applies when someone knowingly does something dangerous that carries a fatal risk, even if they did not plan to kill. Two of the three arrested had tried to flee into nearby woods after the incident. Military Police tracked them down using a helicopter.[20]

Three other people connected to the operation were also detained but later released without charges. The defense attorneys for the arrested men argued their clients had years of experience and that this was the company’s first fatality. However, they did not address why the rope was visibly unattached in the footage, why workers fled the scene, or why the team was operating without any legal authorization.[1] The company’s Instagram page, which had around 80,000 followers and promoted the jump activity, was deleted shortly after the incident — a move that drew sharp criticism from the public and media. Brazil’s Civil Police continue to investigate, and the Limeira City Council has filed a formal complaint against the Brazilian federal government over the tragedy.
