AOC Attacks Republicans Over Ilhan Omar’s Removal

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and House Republicans have removed Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Omar was dismissed from the committee after a 218-211 vote. She has had a history of making anti-Semitic remarks.

One of her most infamous remarks was saying that “Some people did something” in regard to the events of Sep. 11, 2001.

McCarthy was asked by reporters about the removal of Omar from her committee.

“She said on 9/11 — on 9/11 — as a member of Congress, as an individual sitting on Foreign Affairs, something happened that day, what does that say to other people around the world? What does that say to somebody else who wants to create another 9/11, America? I’m sorry, it’s not right,” McCarthy said.

“We were right in our action and she can serve on other committees,” the speaker added.

In 2021, Omar compared the state of Israel to terrorist organizations like Hamas and the Taliban and labeled America’s ally as an “apartheid state.”

Moreover, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took to the House floor to attack the GOP and share her thoughts on the removal of Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Ocasio-Cortez said she believed Omar’s removal was “disgusting” and brings the U.S. to a post-9/11 legacy of “targeting and racism against Muslim Americans.”

“Consistency? There is nothing consistent about the Republican Party’s continued attack except for racism and incitement of violence against women of color in this body,” she said.

Additionally, Cortez called out Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) by mentioning that she has talked about “Jewish space lasers” and was “elevated” to some of the highest committee assignments in the House.

“Don’t tell me this is about a condemnation of anti-Semitic remarks when you have a member of the Republican Caucus who has talked about Jewish space lasers and an entire amount of tropes and also elevated her to some of the highest committee assignments of this body,” Cortez said.

When the New York congresswoman finished her speech, she smashed her notebook against the podium.

Furthermore, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) labeled her colleagues’ removal as “offensive” and “just a bunch of racist gaslighting.”

“Republicans are waging a blatantly Islamophobic and racist attack against Congresswoman Omar. I have said it before, I will say it again: The white supremacy happening is unbelievable. This is despicable,” she said.

Ilhan Omar is the third high-profile Democrat to be removed from a committee under the GOP-led House. Reps., Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) were removed from the House Intelligence Committee.
